Workflow / Engineering drawings

From a saved part to a drawing you can check.

Use Adam to help prepare a native SOLIDWORKS drawing from your model. Start with the right template, give the functional requirements, and review the sheet before it goes to manufacturing.

How to get started
  • Saved source model
  • Your drawing template
  • Native drawing and PDF

01 / Start here

Set up a useful first task.

  1. 01

    Prepare the source

Connect SOLIDWORKS through Adam Connector on Windows. Save the part or assembly and confirm the intended configuration and revision.

  2. 02

    Provide the drawing requirements

Attach your template or identify its location. Specify sheet size, units, projection, material, finish, and the critical dimensions or interfaces.

  3. 03

    Review before release

Check every sheet in SOLIDWORKS and the exported PDF. Confirm that dimensions, references, tolerances, and revision fields match your intent.

02 / In practice

Choose views that explain the part.

Begin with a front view that communicates the most useful geometry. Add projected views where they remove ambiguity, a section for internal features, and a detail view where the sheet cannot show a small feature clearly.

Tell Adam your projection convention instead of relying on the template default. Check view alignment, scale, and the referenced configuration before adding dimensions.

  • Confirm the source file is saved and the intended configuration is active.
  • Specify first-angle or third-angle projection explicitly.
  • Inspect sections and details for the features they must reveal.

03 / In practice

Dimension function, then check completeness.

A drawing needs the dimensions required to make and inspect the part. Ask Adam to place overall dimensions, locate hole patterns from deliberate references, and annotate the features that mate with other parts.

Supply the tolerances and datum scheme that your design requires. AI can help place annotations, but it cannot infer every functional requirement from the solid model. Missing requirements should become questions, not invented values.

  • Dimension features once and avoid conflicting closed chains.
  • Check fits and individual tolerances on critical interfaces.
  • Inspect overlaps, missing center marks, and dimension attachment.
  • Confirm title block, units, material, finish, revision, and general notes.

04 / In practice

Keep both the editable drawing and the review copy.

Ask Adam to save the native drawing as well as exporting a PDF. The native document lets you continue editing views and annotations; the PDF provides a consistent review artifact.

Open the exported file and inspect every sheet. A successful export does not prove that all views are present, the text is legible, or the drawing is ready for manufacture.

Questions, answered

Before you start.

Can Adam use our SOLIDWORKS drawing template?

Provide the template and tell Adam which sheet format and conventions to use. Confirm the resulting title block and document settings; having a template does not establish the part's functional tolerances.

Can AI add GD&T to a drawing?

Adam's SOLIDWORKS workflow can work with drawing annotations, including datums and geometric tolerances. An engineer must supply or approve the functional datum scheme and tolerance requirements.

Is this an automatic drawing approval?

No. This workflow helps prepare a drawing for review. Your engineering and release process still determines whether the drawing is complete and correct.

What files should I keep?

Keep the source model, the editable SOLIDWORKS drawing, and the exported PDF together with the correct revision information.
